The Future of Barbecue Education

Why Northern Barbecue™ is Leading a New Era of Live‑Fire Learning

If there’s one trend that I see on a regular basis, it’s that backyard barbecue is evolving at a pace faster than any time in the past. We’re currently in one of the most exciting times ever to fire up a hardwood lump charcoal grill and start cooking.

What used to be a regional approach to barbecue, has become a global movement, and a growing number of backyard cooks want more than one-off recipes or video tips for brisket or ribs. When I’m out speaking with backyard barbecuers, one thing I find is that the barbecue cooks who want to level-up their grill skill want a better understanding of technique, flavour, and creativity.

That’s a good sign.

It means they want to learn like chefs, not just follow instructions or single dish recipes. This group of backyard cooks are the ones who want to breathe new life into their fires and expand their skills beyond burgers, steak, chicken and ribs.

The Northern Barbecue™ Method of live-fire cooking is at the forefront of this new era.

I created Northern Barbecue™ to be the first curriculum‑based self-guided approach to outdoor cooking that’s designed specifically for backyard cooks who want to build real, transferable skills with live-fire equipment.

Why Barbecue Education is Changing

For the backyard cooks I’ve met who want more than video tips or single-dish sessions, a few areas kept coming up. They want:

  • Global inspiration

  • Clear learning paths

  • Technique‑first learning

  • Build confidence (not guesswork)

  • Creativity, not repetition

The Northern Barbecue™ Method (and the cornerstone Foundations in Fire course) delivers on all of this. In fact, that’s what it was specifically designed to do.

What Makes it the Future of Live-Fire Cooking?

There are a lot of things that set the Northern Barbecue™ apart as a way to grow real cooking skills.

  • It’s structured, but self-driven (work at your own pace)

  • It’s progressive

  • It’s global and cultural

  • It’s adaptable

  • It’s built for real people cooking at home

This isn’t a recipe collection, or a YouTube video tutorial. It’s a learning system designed to take your skills on the grill to new levels through exposure to global grilling techniques and flavours.

Think of Northern Barbecue™ as culinary school for live-fire cooks. Yes, it requires work at the grill and attention to what you’re doing, but the rewards by the end of the process will be noticeable.

Why the Northern Barbecue™ Method Matters

It all boils down to one simple premise (and something I learned in culinary school): understanding. When you understand technique, you can cook anything. When you understand flavour, you can create anything. When you understand fire, you can master anything.

That’s the future of barbecue — and Northern Barbecue™ is leading the way.

Food has always been a unifying force that brings people together. The cultural approach of Northern Barbecue™ celebrates global cuisine and those who create it, and helps to unite people over food from around the globe.
